Antique Japanese Itomasu Edo/Meiji Era 1800’s Rice Measuring Pail 12" Metalwork The metal hardware is handThis is an antique Japanese rice measuring tool called an itomasu. Made the light but durable Sugi wood (Japanese cedar) and reinforced with iron straps and fitted with hand carved wooden handles or iron handles. See photos for details. Used as a unit (1 masu) this bucket was a standard unit used by rice stores throughout Japan in from the Edo ear into the Taisho era. The bucket held about 18 liters, or pounds of rice.
